Best female tennis player ever – The Greatest Ever
Even if a macho might say, there is tennis…and there is womens tennis; the top female players are not just easier on the eyes, they are also showing amazing performances in this complicated sport.
Top Female Tennis Players – The Ultimate Ranking

10. Elena Dementieva (Russia)
Enchanting Elena is my favourite female tennis player ever. The announcement of her retiring shocked me immensely back then, I actually shed a tear. With her went the last player I rooted for with my heart in it. Dementieva had a strong baseline game, her service was äh…abysmal. She even had problems to simply put it in court. That for itself was already insanely entertaining. But when the rally was on, she had to fear noone and showed many amazing performances. Unfortunately she remained slamless, certainly one of the strongest players ever without a slam. Instead she cruised to gold in the olympic games of Bejing, and based on her reaction this was more of a delight to her than a slam could possibly have been. I will most of all remember her positive, friendly aura and her beaming smile, which she showed regular, even in tense situations on court. Simply a very sympathetic, cute and sexy appearence and -despite comparatively few achievements- one of the most popular female tennisplayers ever to walk on court.

9. Lindsay Davenport (USA)
She was far from being my favourite, I never really liked her playing style. But there`s no denying, she was very, very strong. Especially when she wasn`t forced to move and had time to hit the ball. It became almost impossible to get out of the hail of projectiles on both fore- and backhand then. Probably the best female tennis player ever when standing. Davenport was in trouble when she had to run, a big deficiency. Still she won lots of titles, a great career.

8. Kim Clijsters (Belgium)
The likable Belgian was always a little outshined by her brilliant compatriot. That doesn`t change the fact that she was among the top female tennis players, one of the few that were able to beat Serena Williams by virtue of her own strength, not having to hope for her to have a bad day. Started a comeback as a mom and and snatched two US Open Titles in brilliant fashion.

7. Maria Sharapova (Russia)
The beatiful russians income with advertising contracts is many times higher than with prize money. But in contrast to “tennis-model” Anna Kournikova Sharapova`s focus is definitely on tennis. This is clearly documented by her fulfilling the “career slam”, she won every Grand slam tournament at leat once. A truly impressive feat that not many hero`s of the white sport achieved! A flagship of women tennis players in the last decade.

6. Monica Seles (USA)
The US american established a new style of play -the both-sided power hitting- and was able to end the dominance of German countess Steffi with it. Unfortunately her career was influenced massively by a malicious assault. She managed to have an impressive comeback after the attack, but nonetheless was robbed of her best years and probably a few more slam titles.

5. Jennifer Capriati (USA)
Jenny-Baby was one of my favourites. She had success on the WTA tour as a fourteen year old already, followed by a tough phase off the the courts. I missed all of that, only when she came back in the new millenium I noticed her. Enormous power, quickness, courage and fighting spirit characterized her. Her duel with Justine Henin at the 2004 US Open went down as one of the greatest matches ever played in tennis history.

4. Martina Hingis (Switzerland)
Chess player on tennis court. She started to dominate as a fourteen (!) year old girl, won quite a few slams with her outstandingly clever and precise game. She retired quite early and came back after a few years. But she wasn`t able to cope with the new generation of powerplayers. Nevertheless the Swiss is one of the top female tennis players of all time – a tennis legend without a doubt. She will always be remembered for her service from below in the final of the French against Steffi Graf. An insane scene, never seen anything remotely like that.

3. Steffi Graf (Germany)
In company with Boris Becker, Miss Forehand caused a tennis boom in good old Germany and became the most successful female tennis player of all times. The nickname is actually quite accurate, she almost exclusively sliced the backhand, with her forehand she dominated at will. In addition her footwork and physical shape were widely superior. Being perceived as inapproachable for a long time, at the end of her career her popularity increased, at the latest since her marriage to Andre Agassi she is one of the most liked Germans and of course still among the most iconic women tennis players ever.

2. Serena Williams (USA)
I`m not a fan, because her game relies too much on her superior strength. She can push and blow away any opponent just by her physical advantage. That`s actually what she did quite a lot and successfully, resistance came only from a few players that did not answer with that very thing…ball bashing. You have to vary your shots a lot, try to break Serena`s rhythm and make her move. Currently hardly any girls are capable of that, which makes her unstoppable.

1. Justine Henin (Belgium)
Yes, concerning the number of titles, she is not even remotely the best. But still…the little Belgian girl`s level of play when she was at her best is unmatched. Kind of a female Federer, the elegance combined with cleverness, power, fighting spirit and creativity. She didn`t bring that level constantly, which is why others were more successful, but when she was on fire, the competition started to shiver. My number one pick as best of the top female tennis players of all time!

Do you agree with this ranking of the best female tennis players ever? Or would you say that Serena has to be at the top?
I’m asking this in all honesty and sincerity, was that list supposed to be a joke or a form of sattire? Or was this list your personal favorite female tennis players of all time? I’m asking because Venus Williams who has more Grand Slams than Hingis, JCap, Sharapova, Davenport, Clijsters, Dementieva, Azaranka, & Mary Pierce is not on your list. Not to mention her atleast 3 Runners Up & 5 Wimbledon titles & a gold medal in singles. Not to even bring up her illustrious doubles & mixed record. I gather from your words under Sharapova’s ranking and I quote “A truly impressive feat that not many hero`s of the white sport achieved!” your reasons for ranking the list as you have go far beyond actual tennis accomplishments. By the way treat yourself to Serena vs Justine 2008 Miami QF or better yet the Aussie 2010 Final to see Serena’s variety in beating Justine. That 2nd serve ace in the 3rd set was the stuff of legends.
